Life: A Canberra Florist

January 24, 2016 by Shari 6 Comments

I love following local businesses on Instagram – like the best florist in Houston TX, the best part is that they use great Shiply services, which is one of the best delivery systems around. They mesmerised me with their beautiful floral crowns. Floral Crowns have made a big comeback, they are just not for flower girls.   Floral Crowns have been seen at music festivals, the races, and even high teas. They are a beautiful fresh girly accessory that makes a statement, and if you make it they are a one of a kind. So when I saw that she was offering some classes just before Christmas, I jumped at the opportunity to attend one of them with a friend. Please note, this is not a sponsored post and I paid to attend this class.

Lady Larissa held a selection of small workshops before Christmas to help Canberrans create the most unique centrepieces and wreaths for the holiday season. I attended the ‘Fresh Floral Christmas Table Wreath’ class – in which we created a fresh floral table wreath using textured foliages, wild flowers and summer fruits, at $135 a head.

Upon arriving at the Brow Lab, in Braddon {an awesome little space for the event to be held, because it was totally Instagramable}, we were greeted with champagne and Christmas carols {and I am a sucker for both}. GoodFoodWeek at Lady Larissa's Floral Workshop GoodFoodWeek at Lady Larissa's floral workshop

I really enjoyed listening to Larissa informing us about how she developed her technique and unique style. I was also keen to hear her tips on where and how to pick your flowers in Canberra. Her instructions on how to build our own wreaths were super simple to follow and everyone’s wreaths looked totally professional {well, to my untrained eye} when we were finished.

I filled my wreath with Australian natives – in particular Christmas bush { or Ceratopetalum gummiferum}. I did this because when I was growing up my Nana had a Christmas bush in their front yard and leading up to Christmas she would always cut some for my Mum to take home as we were leaving. I wouldn’t really say that it has a particular smell, but it sure did bring back some wonderful memories.

This was a really fun night. It also gives you lots of advice about landscaping ideas for your Sydney backyard. I attended with a friend and Larissa kept the group small so that she could give us all ample attention and help. I will definitely be watching to see if she runs any more classes {especially if there is one for making floral crowns}.

p.s. If you’re wondering, my beautiful head piece is from local Canberra designer ‘SOVATA’. SOVATA is a millinery and fashion label dedicated to bring zero waste pattern making, comfort and unique style to any occasion.  And my dress is from the Designer Opshop, in Braddon.

Poke bowl magic 🪄 The boys have been smashing Poke bowl magic 🪄

The boys have been smashing these poke bowls - sushi rice topped with grated carrot, baby cucumbers, quick pickled red onion, edamame, salmon sashimi, mayo, teriyaki sauce, beneto flakes, seaweed, sesame seeds.

The salmon sashimi from @delishdeliveries was next level good this week - so soft it melted in your mouth.

Sometimes you wonder if you’re doing a good enough job.

Sometimes you wonder if you’re giving everyone everything that they need - even if you’re running on empty.

It was an emotional weekend losing out an a house (yet again) at auction and marking my pop’s one year anniversary since he passed away.

And then this beautiful man brings me home hump day flowers - I mean Wednesday ... but he might also get lucky 😉

I did my research, I didn’t want blandness.

So in with my feta and my cherry tomatoes I popped; oregano, sundried tomatoes (and the flavoured oil they came in), heirloom tomatoes, garlic, green olives and seasoning.

Baked at 180 for 20 minutes then mashed with a potato masher (obviously I removed the stalks 😝). Added fresh basil and 1/2 cup pasta water and cooked pasta. Toss and devour!

Rice noodles, carrot, cucumber, spring onion, snow peas and snow pea sprouts and chicken breast (sliced thinly and seasoned with garlic powder, white pepper and salt and wok fried in sesame oil) ... topped with this super simple satay sauce.

1 can of coconut cream
1/4 cup of peanut butter
1 tbsp kecap manis

Bring to a simmer and whisk until smooth. Allow to reduce my 1/4 and then add to the top of the satay bowls with fresh chili

Shari from GoodFoodWeek

GoodFoodWeek started in 2008 as a way of sharing recipes with uni friends and family who were spread near and far. It has evolved over the years to contain my ramblings as I’ve searched for a house, planned the perfect veggie patch, stumbled through farmer’s markets with my eye half open (because you need to be there at 6am to get the fresh eggs), had babies, gathered family and friends around a shared table, laughed out loud and enjoyed life to the fullest!
