Life: Good palm oil vs. bad palm oil

October 10, 2016 by Shari Leave a Comment

I have a friend on facebook who posts a lot about what products have palm oil in them. But did you know that there is palm oil in more than 50% of all products in our supermarkets – found in everyday items like margarines, biscuits, breads, cereals, noodles and even shampoo, lipsticks and detergents?

Bad palm oil isn’t just a disaster for the environment. It’s destroying the homes of animals like the orangutan and the Sumatran tiger and having a devastating impact on people too. It’s an environmental, ethical and animal welfare nightmare all rolled into one!

But did you know that there is also good palm oil?

Good palm oil is certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO) which means it’s being produced to the strictest of standards. It helps to protect forests and wildlife and secures an income for farmers by making more palm oil from less land. However, today good palm oil only accounts for 17% of all palm oil consumed globally.

I think that good palm oil, also known as sustainable palm oil, should be on our priority list – like buying free-range, fair-trade, natural or organic products when we can.

You might not be able to change all your products over at once, but small steps by many can have a great impact on this cause.

You can look out for the RSPO symbol on products, reassurance it only contains RSPO-certified sustainable palm oil. You can find examples of products with the RSPO symbol here.

Artist, Jessica Dance, has contributed her ‘voice’ to the cause by creating these funky knitted food videos.

The conversation about good and bad palm oil is already happening and Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) want as many people as possible to get involved and share their views. To join the debate on social media, use the hashtag #GoodBadPalmOil

I feel like it’s platter season - however with Covid-19 around we haven’t been getting out and about nor have we been having as many guests as normal.

I was really hoping that we were going to be able to get the opportunity to catch up with people that we hadn’t seen, but it’s not really panning out that way.

Here is a platter from New Years Eve - when some other friend’s plans got cancelled which meant that they were able to pop in and see us (as they were a family of four).

What’s your key to the perfect platter?

Shari from GoodFoodWeek

GoodFoodWeek started in 2008 as a way of sharing recipes with uni friends and family who were spread near and far. It has evolved over the years to contain my ramblings as I’ve searched for a house, planned the perfect veggie patch, stumbled through farmer’s markets with my eye half open (because you need to be there at 6am to get the fresh eggs), had babies, gathered family and friends around a shared table, laughed out loud and enjoyed life to the fullest!
