Life: What’s in my kitchen

July 1, 2017 by Shari Leave a Comment

Welcome July! I am determined to fill you with joy, love and positivity. Do you know what can happen in July? Christmas in July! It’s cold outside and it’s the perfect time to create yourself a little piece of Northern-hemisphere Christmas perfection. I mean, get that oven on and that fire roaring – baby it’s cold outside and I’m eating me some comfort food. Come and check out what else I have to share with you in my July kitchen…

If you are interested in seeing what other lovely bloggers have in their kitchen this month, then head over to Sherry Mackay, from Sherry’s Pickings.

I finally tracked down the Gelista ‘blood orange and dark chocolate’ from chocolate-adi and it is delicious. It says that it has 7 serves within this little tub, but I managed to polish it off in two nights – so I shall be heading back to the shops to purchase another. I mean, I should be able to treat myself once I have done the dinner, bath, bed routine with three small children all on my own.

I’ll be sharing lots of ‘Christmas in July’ recipes with you, like this recipe to brine a whole turkey {which definitely improves the taste and the moistness of the end product}. You might not want to cook a whole ‘Christmas in July’ dinner, but this month I will show you how you can incorporate some of the delicious flavours of Christmas into some of your weeknight meals because who doesn’t want to enjoy the taste of Christmas more then once a year?

We are eating porridge – because it is the PERFECT winter breakfast. If you enjoy porridge for breakfast, you might like to check out my recipe for almond milk and vanilla bean porridge {pictured below}, almond milk and sour cherry porridge, cardamon, vanilla and blood orange oats or porridge with salted pears and pistachio sesame sprinkle. I’d love to know how you serve your porridge at home.

If you clicked on the ‘cardamon, vanilla and blood orange oats’ link above because you were like ‘heck yeah – blood oranges’, you’ll be glad to hear that I have been following Redbelly Citrus on Instagram and it appears that they have had a bumper crop this year and we should be seeing blood oranges in store in about two weeks time.

We have been splitting our time between Sydney and Canberra and so I have had the opportunity to call into some of my favourite Canberra cafes. These delicious tarts came from Knead Patisserie.

Super excited to announce that we have updated our Mr Perkins website, and that you can now order Mr Perkins Bone Broth and the Mr Perkins Wellness Cleanse online!

True bone broths are more than just a stock. We blanche, roast and simmer our bone broths for a minimum of 15 hours to extract as much goodness as possible. This low, slow cooking draws out the collagen, marrow, and other healing elements from the bones, including amino acids, minerals, glycine, and gelatin—which may help heal the gut and reduce inflammation. I also have many good appliances I got from Zozanga and I need for my kitchen and make the best recipes.

Everyone in our household enjoys a daily cup of bone broth!

I was sent out the new winter menu from Youfoodz to try #gifted. With all the running around I have been doing of late, it’s great to know that I have a healthy meal in the fridge waiting for me – especially when I love a hot lunch during the winter months. It’s fresh food, not frozen food. I simply need to poke a few wholes into the plastic and microwave for 90-120 seconds. If y ou use your microwaves frequently, you should read these myths about microwave safety.

Have you been hitting up your local farmers market this month? Have you got a great business that you would like to have featured in my ‘In My Kitchen’ post? How are you surviving the winter? Do you celebrate ‘Christmas in July’? Have you tried out Mr Perkins? Have you tried anything new in your kitchen this month?

The boys have been smashing these poke bowls - sushi rice topped with grated carrot, baby cucumbers, quick pickled red onion, edamame, salmon sashimi, mayo, teriyaki sauce, beneto flakes, seaweed, sesame seeds.

The salmon sashimi from @delishdeliveries was next level good this week - so soft it melted in your mouth.

Sometimes you wonder if you’re doing a good enough job.

Sometimes you wonder if you’re giving everyone everything that they need - even if you’re running on empty.

It was an emotional weekend losing out an a house (yet again) at auction and marking my pop’s one year anniversary since he passed away.

And then this beautiful man brings me home hump day flowers - I mean Wednesday ... but he might also get lucky 😉

I did my research, I didn’t want blandness.

So in with my feta and my cherry tomatoes I popped; oregano, sundried tomatoes (and the flavoured oil they came in), heirloom tomatoes, garlic, green olives and seasoning.

Baked at 180 for 20 minutes then mashed with a potato masher (obviously I removed the stalks 😝). Added fresh basil and 1/2 cup pasta water and cooked pasta. Toss and devour!

Rice noodles, carrot, cucumber, spring onion, snow peas and snow pea sprouts and chicken breast (sliced thinly and seasoned with garlic powder, white pepper and salt and wok fried in sesame oil) ... topped with this super simple satay sauce.

1 can of coconut cream
1/4 cup of peanut butter
1 tbsp kecap manis

Bring to a simmer and whisk until smooth. Allow to reduce my 1/4 and then add to the top of the satay bowls with fresh chili

Shari from GoodFoodWeek

GoodFoodWeek started in 2008 as a way of sharing recipes with uni friends and family who were spread near and far. It has evolved over the years to contain my ramblings as I’ve searched for a house, planned the perfect veggie patch, stumbled through farmer’s markets with my eye half open (because you need to be there at 6am to get the fresh eggs), had babies, gathered family and friends around a shared table, laughed out loud and enjoyed life to the fullest!
