After trying out Eighty Twenty Food in Braddon, as part of my ‘eating out with a toddler’ series, my friend Caddie from LeBeauty Lounge recommended that I try out Local Press in Kingston. Seeing as it was a beautiful spring day in Canberra, I thought that I would take Mr Moo out and about to try the new cafe.
The Kingston Foreshore is a beautiful place to hang out in the spring time – and I emplore Mummies with toddlers to get down there and make the most of it during the week day (whilst all those people who clog it up on the weekend are at work).

Now to start, we picked up a cold pressed juice from Local Press – as that is what they are known for. As I’ve mentioned before, it’s often easier to review the menu whilst your toddler is preoccupied with a delicious drink, so try and order one straight away.
I picked up an ‘orange, apple, ginger, carrot and lemon’ juice for $7. It was a good juice – was it as good as ‘The Fix’ juice that I enjoyed at Eighty Twenty last week? I am not so sure… I did think that the juice was a little small for $7.
I was also a little disappointed that when I tried to order the ‘green juice’ of kale, cucumber, mint, lime and coconut water (also $7) that I was told that they were sold out. I thought that juice was a big part of what they did? Never mind – Mr Moo was happy drinking the first juice so I just ordered a second one for myself.
The juice came out with my food order – which was the veggie stack ($17). There were lots of delicious lunch options on the menu, including a special of ‘seafood chowder’ and smoked ocean trout salad… I will be back for you delicious treats when I am no longer pregnant!
My veggie stack was super tasty, with layers of; mushroom, eggplant, zucchini, haloumi and capsicum upon a spicy rocket salad, chickpeas and yoghurt dressing with a tasty balsamic drizzle. None of this however appealed to Mr Moo.
I guess that’s just something that you have to expect when eating out with a toddler – not everything that you order is going to appeal to them. And that is why I always travel with extra snacks which he can happy eat whilst I am eating my meal.
Some of the best snacks that I have found include; pretzels, banana, saltanas, fruit strips, vegemite sandwich fingers, cheese fingers, muesli bars. You have to think finger foods, because although I am a big fan of Rafferty pouches – I want Mr Moo to feed himself whilst I eat my lunch.
The other thing to keep in mind is that things like muesli bars and saltanas will last in your baby bag, where as you won’t want to keep sandwich fingers past the day you make them and I like to keep my cheese cold.
But the great part about Local Press is that after our extremely healthy lunch, we headed out into the sunshine for a walk along the boardwalk down to the park. It isn’t a park in terms of ‘play equipment’, but their are ducks and swans in the lake to keep your toddler amused and lots of green grass for them to burn off some steam running around on.
Would I return to this cafe with a toddler – yes… during the week that is, because I think toddlers get a little restless when there are larger waits (and I’ve heard that this does occur on the weekend). Food is delicious, service is friendly and although Mr Moo didn’t eat anything here – he was loving running around in the Foreshore sunshine.
