Motherhood: Do you have a Kanye West in your life?

November 10, 2014 by Shari

Do you have a Kanye West in your life? I’m talking about this – ‘Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you, and I’m going to let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time,’

Now, for me it isn’t about music…it’s about children. This Kanye West in my life will actually be the one to start a conversation about children and then just like to cut you off. Or even more annoyingly, you’ll be having an indepth conversation about being pregnant/labour/raising children and he’ll come over and just cut off whoever is talking – for {in his mind} he knows best…

For example:

At the birth of our little dude, I wanted to avoid this Kanye West as I knew that he would just want to rain on my parade. As soon as they saw me they asked me how I was going… but, as soon as I tried to say that I was having a blast, they chimed in with ‘but it’s hard, it’s hard isn’t it’.

Umm, no Kanye – at the moment, for me, raising these two precious boys isn’t hard. My toddler is adjusting well to having a little brother and loves to give him kisses. My baby is amazing – eating and sleeping, in fact in two and a half weeks he put on 1kg of breast feeding goodness.

I know that at times raising kids can be challenging. But I love being a Mum. I feel that I have been blessed with children who are healthy and blessed with the opportunity to be a stay-at-home-mum at the moment. I wouldn’t give it up for the world.

At the birth of a friend’s baby, Kanye decided to chime in when the female friend asked me about breastfeeding… Something like ‘Yo, Shari, I’m really happy that your breast feeding and I’m going to let you finish, but I know all that there is about breast feeding and I think I’m in a better position to handle this question’…

Oh I am sorry Kanye, I didn’t realise that you are blessed with breasts and have breast fed your children!

At the birth of another friend’s baby, Kanye just wanted to let us know that he also knew that the birth of their second child would be a lot easier… He proclaimed something like, ‘Yo {insert friend’s name here}, I’m really sorry that you had a traumatic birth story and I’m going to let you finish, but you know that you shouldn’t be worried about giving birth again because I know all about the birthing process and it’s easy!’.

Oh I am sorry Kanye, I didn’t realise that you are blessed with a uterus and have given birth to your children! I didn’t know that you have felt  – actually felt – what it is like to be pregnant for 9 months, go overdue and then give birth to a child.

Yo Kanye – no one wants to hear your 50 cents! I understand that Dads have an important role to play in making babies, labour stories and raising children… but you have no idea of what it is like to a) carry a baby and go through a traumatic birth, b) breastfeed a child – which at times can also be very traumatic if a baby has issues or a mother’s milk doesn’t come in or you have attachment issues, and c) you aren’t the primary carer for your children so you don’t understand the issues of staying at home and being with children all day long.

This post isn’t about hating on Dads – it’s about hating on Kanye West ‘know-it-all’ types. Do you have a Kanye in your life? Please share with me and make me feel a little better…

GoodFoodWeek started in 2008 as a way of sharing recipes with uni friends and family who were spread near and far. It has evolved over the years to contain my ramblings as I’ve searched for a house, planned the perfect veggie patch, stumbled through farmer’s markets with my eye half open (because you need to be there at 6am to get the fresh eggs), had babies, gathered family and friends around a shared table, laughed out loud and enjoyed life to the fullest!
