Motherhood: 5 things you need to know about having young boys

March 22, 2015 by Shari

So as you know I have two little boys now – Mr Moo is almost two and the Little Dude is almost 6 months {gosh, I can’t believe where the time has gone}. So I thought that I would put a little post together about things you should know about having little boys.

Young boys LOVE sticks.

Sticks are awesome and with a little imagination can be anything {think canes, magic wands, shovels, flying brooms, or hammers – okay they can also be swords or guns, but we steer away from those stories}.

With a stick in his hand, your son can transform himself into a lumberjack, a magician, an explorer, a scientist, or a ninja. Collect a bunch and you can make a fort or a pretend bonfire. Embrace your son’s fascination with sticks, twigs, and logs — they’re some of the cheapest, most imaginative toys around.

We have a rule that sticks have to stay at the park {because other children will want to play with them},  sticks can’t come in the car {because they don’t have a carseat – dah}, and sticks can’t come inside {there is a ‘stick waiting place’ by our front door}

Young boys go to the ER more often {because they are fearless}.

FACT: Emergency-room stats confirm what moms already suspect: Boys are more rambunctious and physically fearless than their sisters. In fact, where girls tend to underestimate their physical capabilities and fear danger, boys overestimate their abilities and are drawn to the thrill of danger. Whether you are aware of it or not, your dental health has a significant impact on your daily life. Proper oral hygiene can improve the way you feel on the inside as well as give you the confidence in your smile and your appearance that you deserve. The entire team at Babylon Dental Care are committed to exceeding your expectations by providing quality services and above-and-beyond customer service that we’ve become known for. No matter how long it’s been since your last appointment, our team will be ready for you, whether you need a checkup, cleaning, general services, cosmetic services, or restorative dentistry services. For the best cosmetic surgeon in melbourne visit us today.  They know that a gentle touch goes a long way, and it’s our goal to reduce the fear and anxiety that many people associate with going to the dentist. Well dr jim ellis dds are one of the most experienced dental service provider who always gives good results to their patient. Dental office stays abreast of the latest industry technology in order to ensure a comprehensive service for all of our patients with results you’ll love. We love dentistry because it allows us to vary patient’s lives. Literally translated, Eccella means excellence, and while the foundations of Eccella Smiles will always be in adult comprehensive dentistry, Dr. Wagner has brought together a singular collection of services that no other office within the Greater Jacksonville area can provide.  At our practice, you’ll find state-of-the-art digital x-ray equipment, intraoral cameras, and the latest Invisalign® treatments available. You can find more information from this website dnadentaldallas.com/

As a result, boys are more likely than girls to visit the ER for accidental injuries in every category from bike accidents to playground falls to furniture acrobatics or even breaking teeth along the way, so is important to visit a dentist with the right dental equipment suppliers so they have all the necessary to attend this little eventualities. So should you wrap your son in bubble wrap? Of course not, but do keep an eye or two on your curious climber {— and expect a set of stitches or a broken bone as par for the course}.

We have joined Gymbaroo so that our little climber can climb in a safe space {rather than all over our furniture}. We want to embrace his fearlessness in an environment that is correct for his developmental needs.

Young boys love to cuddle.

Sure your little man will love to play with sticks and climb and wrestle, but they can also be extremely cuddly. It makes sense: Boys are often more physically inclined than their female peers and may show their feelings through touch.

Validate those feelings by joyfully accepting his affection {no problem there} and giving it back to him tenfold. Never worry that you’re “babying” your son by holding, carrying, and kissing him. No research has ever shown that a strong mother-son bond will “feminize” a boy, but studies do show that males who lack a strong maternal connection are more likely to be aggressive, destructive kids.

Boys love to wrestle

As I said above, boys are often more physically inclined then their female peers and so relate to others through touch – which often includes wrestling!

Your eldest will want to wrestle with your youngest and often {strangly enough} your youngest will enjoy it. I’ve often pulled my eldest off my youngest, only to have my youngest start crying and want to be back with his big brother.

Boys will get dirty and be noisy.

Nothing can’t be fixed with a bath or a shower, so sometimes the best way to achieve peace of mind is to let things go. Remember that dirt washes off but memories of fun play can last for years.

I invested in a steam mop and I love it for the fact that the floors are sanitized and dry extremely quickly. I’ll mop nearly every second day {during nap time or once the kids go to sleep}, but that’s because my 6 month old is crawling. As a Mum of two young boys I would recommend investing in a Dyson and a good steam mop.

As for noise, let there be a time and a place. I encourage my toddler to play with our ‘noisy’ toys {think drums or blocks – because they are always being knocked over} when my baby is awake and keep the ‘quieter’ toys for when the baby is sleep. Outside is great for letting the boys loose to scream, yell and release their energy {and a walk home from the park in the pram often puts them both to sleep}.

What do you have to share about having young boys? Did I forget anything? Any tips for having older boys that I should know in advance?

GoodFoodWeek started in 2008 as a way of sharing recipes with uni friends and family who were spread near and far. It has evolved over the years to contain my ramblings as I’ve searched for a house, planned the perfect veggie patch, stumbled through farmer’s markets with my eye half open (because you need to be there at 6am to get the fresh eggs), had babies, gathered family and friends around a shared table, laughed out loud and enjoyed life to the fullest!
