Motherhood: Babies and Food Workshops

July 3, 2015 by Shari

I thought that I had the whole feeding a newborn/baby/toddler thing down pat with Mr Moo, then the Little Dude came along and totally hit me for six. So much so that I went looking for help; I turned to my local MACH nurse, books from the library and experts with online restaurant training resources to know they can cover all of the food matters with an accurate service and professionalism with the food workshops we will present.
I came across Simone from Play with Food and this is where I actually started getting some help.

She’d written a post entitled ‘Donuts Pave the Way to Healthy Eating‘ which is all about donut stands and I left the following comment:’My eldest started eating solids when he was almost 4 months old – and took to it like a duck to water. My 8 month old is completely different.

Both were breast fed, but my second hates solids and won’t allow us to put a spoon in his month {although he is happy to put rusks, trucks, trains and lego in there himself}.

I am now taking the ‘baby led weaning approach to feeding him – but this means that he doesn’t actually get that much in his mouth and I end up breast feeding throughout the night to top up his calorie intake. ANY TIPS FOR A TIRED MAMA?’
Trying to get the Little Dude to eat solids
Not only was Simone extremely helpful in her responses to my questions, but she then contacted me later with the following:

‘I know you may not remember my blog, however, your comment has resonated with me significantly over the past few weeks.

I have decided to run a Babies and Food workshop to discuss the developmental food continuum over a baby’s first 24 months. I know that you are in Canberra, however, I wanted to send you this information about how I am trying to get it “off the ground” in Sydney. I plan to run it each month.’

Now these classes sounded really good to me, so I thought that I would do a bit of a community service announcement and let you know about them too {in case you’re facing the same dramas as me with getting your little one to eat}.

“Breaking Down Barriers to Eating Through Play” will be running from 11 July for 4 weeks for toddlers and preschoolers at $25/lesson. To read more about Play with Food’s signature program please see http://www.playwithfood.com.au/about/what-happens-in-class/

“Babies and Food” will be running on 26 June and then on 24 July. They aim to run this every month and will be booking in additional health experts in upcoming months to deliver the professional talk component. Please see this link for more information on this unique feeding workshop covering 0 – 24 mths.

Now, I know these classes are in Sydney but if you are a Canberra Mummy and think that this would be of interest to you, Simone has expressed that she could run a class down here {if she was able to secure an appropriate space and numbers} – so get commenting here if you would like her to come to Canberra.
Are you a Mummy to young children who have a few eating issues? Would you like some tips and tricks to help you to get your children to eat healthier? Are your children like chalk and cheese when it comes to some things?

Shari from GoodFoodWeek

GoodFoodWeek started in 2008 as a way of sharing recipes with uni friends and family who were spread near and far. It has evolved over the years to contain my ramblings as I’ve searched for a house, planned the perfect veggie patch, stumbled through farmer’s markets with my eye half open (because you need to be there at 6am to get the fresh eggs), had babies, gathered family and friends around a shared table, laughed out loud and enjoyed life to the fullest!
