My beautiful best friend is getting married in November and has asked me if I would whip up a cake – you know to be her wedding cake. It’s a lot of pressure, but I said okay, because she is my best friend and I want to be able to help out where I can. I have been checking out ‘naked’ wedding cakes online because I think this is the direction I will go in {as I have never worked with fondant – and I kinda think it tastes revolting}. I’ve also been looking at a beautiful wooden board that I can display the cake on and provide as a wedding gift.
My aesthetic is leaning towards a round cake with flower detailing – and I think that this would fit nicely with the garden themed wedding that my friend is planning. I think that I would like to display the cake on a beautiful wooden board, although I do like the glass stands in some of the images. I guess it just depends on what I can get my hands on in the coming weeks.
I think that it is really nice to be able to have something like this to hold onto from your wedding and use through out your life. It can not only bring back lovely memories from your wedding, but of birthdays or births or any celebration that you might use it for. Whilst we didn’t have a board from our wedding, I do have a beautiful cake knife that was gifted to me by one of my beautiful bridesmaids.
My plan is to bake all the cakes in Canberra and then freeze them – so that they will travel better {as they have to make it to Sydney and then a little further north}. I know that we shall be putting together the floral arrangements on the day so hopefully I can grab a bunch or two for the cake. I’ve also been working on some salted caramel popcorn for decoration {because SALTED CARAMEL POPCORN}.
I think it is amazing that this wedding will be filled with such loving and personal touches from so many of the bridal party members – did I mention that one of the bridesmaids is making the wedding dress? It kind of reminds me of the stories my Mum told of her own wedding. My Godmother {my Mum’s best friend} made her wedding dress, my Nana made all of the bridesmaid dresses and my Aunt made the wedding cake.
Now that I have the ‘look and feel’ down, I just have to finalise the flavour. I have been looking at Erin Made This’ Naked Coconut Layer Cake with Passionfruit Curd {she sure does have some pretty WOW cake recipes}, but then again so does Steph from Raspberri Cupcakes. I have been thinking about creating her ‘Eton Mess Cake‘ as I think that it would be prefect for the garden setting. It kinda needs to be a flavour that appeals to all.
What flavour was your wedding cake? Did you have anyone help you make anything for your wedding day? What are some of your fondest memories from your wedding day? Do you like the naked cake trend?

Yum to all the above! I want a naked cake just because it’s Wednesday please 😉 I think the key with naked cakes is not to go too crazy with the flower decorations. I definitely prefer the less is more approach. Also salted caramel popcorn = brilliant idea! 🙂

I think a naked cake because it is Wednesday is perfect okay! In fact I have just pulled an orange and poppyseed cake out of the oven {it’s my husband’s favourite cake flavour – requested to take to work for ‘snacking’}. Yes, totally agree with not going over board with the flavours.

I love ‘naked’ wedding cakes! I am sort of glad Pinterest wasn’t around when I got married, I can imagine how much more I would of spent and wanted haha!

I think that you could completely go crazy with ideas for your wedding looking at Pintrest. No wonder the standard Australian wedding costs $30 000. We were so lucky that our parents paid for our wedding {with 315 guests}.
