The other day, one of Mr Moo’s favourite dinosaurs took a tumble from the kitchen bench and lost a leg. There were tears – lots and lots of tears. I thought about leaving this situation for Daddy to fix, but I couldn’t take any more tears. So when I put the Little Dude down for a nap I searched our cupboards for some super glue – I knew that there had to be a tube somewhere.
It was a simple repair job to reattach Mr Velociraptor’s leg. What I wasn’t expecting was our super glue tube to be broken and, when I squeezed said tube, that the glue would go all over my hand {so glad that I had put the Little Dude down and didn’t have to worry about picking him up}. So here are the five steps that I used to get the super glue off my hands:
Step 1: Wash hands under warm running water with soap. Seems obvious that your first reaction is to go and wash your hands with warm water and soap. This isn’t going to be a miracle cure – it is called super glue for a reason – but it is a step in the right direction.
Step 2: Make a lemon juice and salt rub. A light exfoliant is what you’re looking to make and then gently scrub the affected areas. This mixture appealed to me because it was natural. I did however have super glue on my fingers when I finished this step, so I moved onto something a little tougher.
Step 3: Apply nail polish remover. Now your nail polish remover must contain acetone otherwise, it won’t help you at all. Acetone softens cyanoacrylate. Rub it on the super glue. It should start peeling off. Do not use a cotton swab, as this can react very violently with cyanoacrylate {thanks for that tip Wiki}.
Step 4: Rub with an emery board. My final attempt to remove the super glue included an emery board. I let the area dry, then used a nail emery board to remove the glue {you’ll need to be careful not to remove your skin, too}. Now this also happened to be when the little dude awoke from his nap – so I moved onto step 5.
Step 5:Let it peel off on its own. It will turn white, but it will not hurt you, and it’ll eventually come off without your help. The natural oils in your hands will loosen the glue over time.
My apologies to my Netball team for my dodgy shooting that night – for it is quiet hard to put a shot up when your fingers are still slightly stuck together. Thankfully, everything was back to normal the following day.
Have you ever had a run in with super glue? What methods have you used to remove super glue from skin? Do you leave the majority of your toy repairing to your husband?

This was very useful. I get superglue all over myself every time I touch it. I’m pretty sure I’ve glued my fingers together.

Thanks Christine. It’s always nice to know that I’m not the only one. I figure that most Mums will end up with super glue on themselves at some point in time.

It’s gotten to the point where my husband sees me go for the glue and takes it off me to save us all. 😉
