Life: Love Local – The Muesli Bar

November 15, 2015 by Shari

Do you eat cereal for breakfast? Where has that cereal come from? Have you heard of The Muesli Bar? If you live in Canberra {or the surrounding area} this is an awesome small business that you want to get to know. They’ve taken the time to work out exactly what you want in your bowl each morning – perfecting the ratio of sultanas, sesame seeds and nuts in your muesli!

What is your food story?

Our muesli passion was born years ago. Lisa became tired of the muesli options available at the supermarket – ingredients that she wanted in her muesli were lacking or not available, and too many sultanas always ended up in her bowl – so she finally decided to hunt down everything separately and make her own natural muesli. Rowly loves toasted muesli, but also dissatisfied with the options available at the supermarket and how expensive the better commercial brands were. So a year ago Lisa delved into the world of making toasted muesli and granola for Rowly, which they both became addicted to. Lisa had thought about doing a build your own muesli website about 5 years before that, but obviously never acted on that thought. We decided that it would be nice to be able to share these yummy muesli combinations with other people, and we also identified a gap in the market (literally – at the farmers markets!) and so The Muesli Bar was born.

Why are you passionate about Canberra’s local produce?

It’s fresh, top quality, made by people who are passionate about good produce.

Why is it important that we understand where our food comes from?

So we can make informed decisions about whether it has been covered in pesticides or not, produced using underpaid labourers or not, and so we can choose to support local – or not.

What differentiates your muesli from others?

The fact it’s custom made, by hand, with love : ) we source as locally as possible, as fresh as possible, and not only do we offer a top quality product that puts the customer in the driver seat of what end up in their bowl, we offer top level customer service, because that is something else we are passionate about.

What does local produce mean to you?

Food produced locally by farmers who live close by. Produced by passionate individuals who are environmentally responsible. Fresh, high quality, seasonal produce.

Why is supporting local important to you?

Why support a producer on the other side of the world when you can support a farmer down the road growing the same thing?! Supporting our local economy keeps hard working farmers and business owners afloat, and you know exactly where your items are coming from.

The Muesli Bar

Have you poured some delicious ‘The Muesli Bar’ muesli into your bowl? What is your muesli combination? Is there a local Canberra food story that you would like me to cover? If you would like to share your local food story I would love for you to get in contact with me!

Looks great! It’s so fantastic to find local companies that make yummy goodies. One of my favourites here in QLD is the Noosa Chocolate Factory and I just can’t get enough!

I love muesli for breakfast and completely agree with the overuse of sultanas and high prices I pay in the supermarket! This is such a great concept and I love how they support local. I’m sure their customers really appreciate that too. I think The Muesli Bar needs to expand and open in Perth 🙂

I love finding local producers who really care about the product that they’re selling {and see their consumers face to face – so they’ll know if people are unhappy with the sultana ratio}. Maybe they’ll expand to Perth, Tash – you never know 🙂

GoodFoodWeek started in 2008 as a way of sharing recipes with uni friends and family who were spread near and far. It has evolved over the years to contain my ramblings as I’ve searched for a house, planned the perfect veggie patch, stumbled through farmer’s markets with my eye half open (because you need to be there at 6am to get the fresh eggs), had babies, gathered family and friends around a shared table, laughed out loud and enjoyed life to the fullest!
