Life: Rings on, rings off

January 30, 2016 by Shari

When I first received my engagement ring, I took it off to do most things as I didn’t want it to get dirty or scratched. My husband was quiet perplexed with my thinking, informing me that the diamond was going to scratch everything before anything scratched the diamond – not to mention the fact that he didn’t want me to misplace the ring. I then decided that I would only take my ring off to play netball.

My Nana gave me a beautiful glass ring stand that my Pop had given her for her 21st. It is an awesome place for me to leave my rings whilst I am playing netball, as they go in the same safe place each week {so I actually remember where I have put them, and they are out of reach of tiny fingers}.

When I first received my engagement ring, I had to have it resized as it was a little too big and I didn’t want it sliding off. When I was pregnant with Mr Moo, I had terrible water retention and my fingers swelled up so much that I had to take my rings off and wear them on a chain around my neck. Thankfully, this didn’t happen when I was pregnant with the Little Dude.

The other day I jumped into the shower to wash my hair, I was lost in the wonderful moment that is 15 minutes to myself, when I heard a clink. I didn’t think much of it at first. And then when I looked into the suds on the floor of the shower and there were my rings, lying precariously close to the drain! In my rigorous efforts to wash my hair, I had slipped both rings off my fingers and they were about to go down the drain.

My heart stopped, I grabbed the rings and placed them on the bath mat – thinking to myself that I would definitely remember to pick them up, when I had finished, and put them back on. I went back to my shower thinking how lucky I was that I had not, in fact, lost my rings down the drain.

I finished, wrapped a towel around me and proceeded to our bedroom to get dressed – WITHOUT REMEMBERING THE RINGS.

I returned to the bathroom to dry my hair with the hairdryer. I picked up the bath mat to shake it out and place it over the edge of the bath to dry – sending my rings flying. How could I have forgotten they were there? After having children, I feel like my mind is a sieve. I need to keep to my routine, otherwise things just go out the window. I have therefore decided that it is best that I now take off my rings to wash my hair – they will go in the same place and I will remember where they are and they will be safe.

Do you wear your engagement and wedding rings all the time? What are the reasons that cause you to take off your rings? Have you ever had that heart stopping moment, when you think that your rings are about to go down the sink? Or in fact, have you ever lost your engagement or wedding ring?

Shari from GoodFoodWeek

GoodFoodWeek started in 2008 as a way of sharing recipes with uni friends and family who were spread near and far. It has evolved over the years to contain my ramblings as I’ve searched for a house, planned the perfect veggie patch, stumbled through farmer’s markets with my eye half open (because you need to be there at 6am to get the fresh eggs), had babies, gathered family and friends around a shared table, laughed out loud and enjoyed life to the fullest!
