So I am finally pulling out some of the non-board books for the boys to read at bedtime. I really hate having books ripped, so I have kept those with paper pages out of reach for quiet some time, I decided to use the options from audiobookhoarder.com, I always asked myself: is all you can books worth it? until I really found out. Today, I thought that I would share with you 5 picture books that we are loving right now. Here is the best Books First blog for book review.
I mean, a story needs to also be enjoyed by the parent as the book is probably going to be read a million times – and I am kinda kicking myself at buying all of those ‘That’s not my…’ books as they are so repetitive. But the boys do love them. All you can books review by audiobookhoarder.
Book ONE – The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland
This has been a bit hit with Mr Moo and a definite favourite at bedtime. This Australian story is a really delightful tale of four friends, Zebra, Moose, Lion and Sheep, who escape the rain by taking shelter in a cave and playing a card game to wile away the time, until their entrance awakens a very cranky bear who shoes them back out into the cold and wet jungle {it’s a kids picture book – don’t worry about the realism of a sheep and a lion being friends, or that they live in a cold jungle. It rhymes, and it reads well!}.
Lion, Moose and Zebra each come up with crazy ideas for making the bear happy, thinking that he must be cranky because he has no stripes, no horns and no mane. It’s quiet Sheep that realises what Bear really wants: a nice pillow so he can get some good sleep!
Book TWO – The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt
This is an awesome book with out any rhyming {why do all children’s books feel that they need to rhyme?}. The picture as also great and lots of fun to explore.
One day, a little boy Duncan goes to get his crayons and instead finds a stack of letters. All of his crayons have written him a letter expressing their grievances and why they have quit. They are not a happy bunch, red is overworked, blue is stumpy and tired of being the favorite color year after year, and yellow and orange are arguing over who is the true color of the sun. Their argument is making the other crayons miserable.
Each spread features the letter from the color and drawings by Duncan or his coloring books. I loved the variety of papers on which the crayons wrote their letters.
Book THREE – The Good Dinosaur by Disney Pixar
Mr GFW took Mr Moo to the movies at Christmas time to see his very first movie which was ‘The Good Dinosaur’. So when I saw that the book was on sale the other day, I thought that it would be a great way to remember his first movie.
Mr Moo {and the Little Dude} are massive dinosaur fans so they love this book.
Book FOUR – Hey Diddle Diddle by Kate Toms
This book is great for the Little Dude as even though the pages aren’t board, they are thicker then standard paper – so great for little hands to turn. We love this story as ‘Hey Diddle Diddle’ is one of our favourite nursey rhymes. We also have the book ‘The Wheels on the Bus’ by Kate Toms which is awesome.
In fact, I am actually going to see if I can track down a few more of these books by Kate Toms to gift to the Little Dude at either his birthday or when the new baby arrives.
Book FIVE –Peppa Pig: On Pirate Island Sound Book
Like most toddler/preschooler households, we don’t mind a bit of Peppa Pig. I loved this book as it brought back childhood memories of my own ‘sound books’.
If you’re a child of the 80’s, you too might have owned the Sesame Street sound book – with the sloppy jalopy {my favourite sound} or the Little Mermaid sound book – with the cackling Ursula {also my favourite sound}.
We read this story all the time and the boys love pushing the sound buttons. Their favourite sounds include the children calling out ‘wake up Grandpa Pig’ and the crab ‘pinch, pinch’.
So parents – hit me up with some of your children’s favourite picture books at the moment. Your children don’t have to be toddlers/preschoolers right now – I love re-reading the old classics from my own childhood. Any books to avoid?

My girls love some of these too. I kept the library books away from the girls for a while. They are now old enough to not rip them ??

Oh yeah, Library book nightmare 🙁

Oh I haven’t heard of any of these books so I will put these on our list. My daughter loves Baby’s first day out and Baby’s first birthday. They are really hard and simple. She often brings them to me to read to her
Shari from GoodFoodWeek says
So cute – I haven’t heard of those books, Raylene. I will have to look into some more ‘board’ books with another little one on the way.

I love reading The Day The Crayons Quit but my kids get board. A favourite all round is definitely The Very Cranky Bear. So fun!
Shari from GoodFoodWeek says
Oh no – hopefully they’ll like it in a couple of months or so?

Oh I haven’t heard of any of these. I’m so old skool, I can never go past The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Avocado Baby is another one of my all time faves.
Shari from GoodFoodWeek says
Sammie, we are still massive fans of the Very Hungry Caterpiller – and the Very Hungry Caterpiller -colours, shapes and letters book.

The Very Cranky Bear is one of our very favourites too along with The Very Noisy Bear. They are both books that I’m happy to read again and again. I’m surprised the sound buttons still work with our Peppa Pig ‘Stomp and Roar’ dinosaur sound book! Those sound books just keep going and going. Another big favourite at the moment is ‘The Pigeon Needs A Bath’ by Mo Willems – it’s hilarious! xx
Shari from GoodFoodWeek says
Thanks for all the extra awesome books, Tash. I’ll be hunting down these books so that we have a few special treats when baby number three arrives.
shannon@ my2morrows says
The day the crayons quit is a fave with my2morrows too. And the second book, the day the crayons came home is great too. It even had a glow in the dark page!! We are also loving pig the pug books. They are short and sweet and fun. Xx

I didn’t know that their was a sequel! That’s pretty exciting – I may have to hunt it down as a gift for the boys when baby number three arrives.
