I didn’t know what to share with you this month. I had been planning for August to be about ‘comfort foods’ and I had prescheduled some yummy recipes that I had been working on for baked nachos, pear and dark chocolate bread and butter pudding, and all things to do with a delicious leg of lamb…And then I watched ‘What the Health’ and I’ve been eating less and less meat and dairy and have seriously been contemplating becoming a vegan.
Now, we have a few ‘Meatless Monday’ recipes here at GoodFoodWeek. And in all honesty, I kinda liked the idea of our family eating more fruits and veggies and less meat. But after watching ‘What the Health’ I was surprised at how much my mind/body was rejecting dairy.
I’m lactose intolerant, so I didn’t have a lot of dairy in my diet. But one night, when I whipped up a vegetarian meal of grilled eggplant, wrapped around herbed spiked ricotta, baked in a delicious homemade tomato sauce – I was seriously gagging at the thought of the cheese.
A lot of people have been talking about food documentaries, on social media, and how they are making people rethink their diets. Sammie from The Annoyed Thyroid has a great posts called ‘7 Game Changing Food Documentaries‘, if you are also interested in looking into this.
And then Catherine over at ‘Forked If I Know‘ committed to going vegan for a month and her meals have looked pretty impressive over on Instagram. So I am thinking that our family might also commit to a month of going vegan.

So here is my conundrum…. In my August kitchen…
We have a couple of legs of lamb. My Uncle has been winning them at the local pub meat raffle – and seeing as he lives alone, he brings the lamb legs around to my house {to keep in our big freezer and to cook up for him}. These legs of lamb go against our month of veganism – but I think that in the end we will probably still incorporate a little good quality, organic meat into our diet.
In my August kitchen…
We’ve been stoking up on lots of delicious produce, like these carrots from our local farmers markets. I have actually been hitting up the EPIC farmers market in Canberra, because we have been spending a lot of time down there of late.
In my August kitchen…
We are loving these ‘baby’ beetroots – are they baby? I’m not sure…but they are definitely smaller then some of the beets that I have picked up from the farmers market – and when they are smaller, they are often sweeter and seriously delicious baked! Oh and bread – we have had a lot of sourdough in our kitchen. We were eliminating gluten from our diet – but it has crept back in with the elimination of meat and dairy.
In my August kitchen…
We have been drinking a lot of coconut water! I picked up this Coconut Water from our local Supabarn the other day, as they were on special {two for the price of one}. We normally drink the Cocobella brand – as the boys love it plain and with cocoa. I am also a big fan of the coconut and watermelon version.
In our August kitchen…
I have also got a couple of bottles of Nonna Maria’s authentic passata. I picked this up as it reminded me of my good friend Maria who owns Nonna Maria’s pasta in Canberra. You should definitely check out their homemade pasta at the Southside Farmers Markets if you live in Canberra.
