We love Bluey. And so I was tickled pink when Z man requested a Bluey birthday cake for his third birthday (I’m a little tired of recreating a dinosaur cake).
As you know, I’m not really a fan of fondant, so I thought that a delicious blue buttercream icing would do nicely as the base for our ‘Bluey’ themed birthday cake.
I went with a three and decided to decorate with blue and orange candies. The thing is – blue and orange candies don’t necessarily taste amazing with vanilla sponge and swiss meringue buttercream icing. So I hunted around for chocolates wrapped in blue or orange packaging.
I also added some mini pup paw prints – created with mini oreos and malteasers. I’ve used this idea before when I created the construction pup cupcakes for The Little Dude’s second birthday.
And some cut outs of Bluey and Bingo, supported by some coloured paddle-pop sticks. I downloaded my images from here.
I think I got the flavour combination pretty spot on and Z man was super excited with the end result.
Recipe: Bluey themed birthday cake
- 2 vanilla sponge cakes (this is a great gluten free recipe)
- Icing – coloured with blue food colouring
- Mini Oreos
- Malteasers
- Cookies and Cream Lindt balls
- Baci chocolates
- Jaffa Balls from Darrell Lee
Bake your cakes in round tins. Place a coffee mug in the middle (wrapped in baking paper) before you pour in the batter – this will give you a space in the middle and make it easier for you to shape your 3.
Slice your cakes into the number 3 and then top with the blue icing.
Mount your cut outs onto coloured paddle pop sticks and place into the cake.
Add in paw prints by adding one mini oreo, with three malteasers on top. Make mounts of the other blue, orange and chocolate coloured chocolates around the cake.
Have you ever whipped up a recipe from my blog? I would love for you to let me know…So I don’t feel as if I am just writing all this stuff down for nothing… If you choose to whip up one of my recipes , then I would love for you to share it on social media, and don’t forget to use the hashtag #goodfoodweek.
