I don’t think they’re listening

August 22, 2013 by Shari

Do you ever feel like a person is talking at you, rather than having a conversation with you? And when they finally pause to take a breathe and you slip in something about you, that they simply pass straight over your point, like it didn’t even matter.
Listening is a skill that sadly some people have and some people do not have… Don’t even get me started on comprehension and compassion – I’m still stuck at the basics of listening with some people!

Sometimes people don’t listen because they are preoccupied – they are trying to juggle a baby and cooking dinner, they are distracted by financial difficulties or something else playing on their mind, or they are in a situation where they can’t actually hear because, for example, the music is too loud. I’m not taking about these people…

It’s that person who you sit down with, who should be listening to what you have to say because many if these things have an impact on their life… But they just don’t listen to what you have to say.

These people are so self absorb that they are only interested in telling their own stories for you to listen to.

What makes these people think that their stories are so interesting? (Or that you enjoy hearing them for the umpteenth time?)

How did they make it through life with people who would listen to them without wanting to share a story for them to listen to?

And finally, will anyone be able to change these people? Is it possible to train a person like that to listen?

I’m guessing no… So I’ll just have a vent about it on my little blog and keep on being a good listener and share my stories here with you.

GoodFoodWeek started in 2008 as a way of sharing recipes with uni friends and family who were spread near and far. It has evolved over the years to contain my ramblings as I’ve searched for a house, planned the perfect veggie patch, stumbled through farmer’s markets with my eye half open (because you need to be there at 6am to get the fresh eggs), had babies, gathered family and friends around a shared table, laughed out loud and enjoyed life to the fullest!
