Think outside the box and try a lamb pattie rather than a beef pattie. Carmelise some red onions with a little balsamic vinegar rather than frying off some standard brown onions. And what about trying some delicious pumpkin and cashew dip as a spread rather than your standard tomato sauce.
Recipe: spiced lamb burgers
These burgers are delicious and can be an excellent meal – with or without some form of bread for a bun (although I did serve mine with some toasted turkish bread). Spice up the standard burger pattie for a healthy and quick meal during the week.
I’m not saying that there is anything wrong with the standard beef burger and all its trimmings – I’m just saying, why not try something a little different every now and again!
SPICED LAMB BURGERS
500 grams lamb mince
1 red onion
1 egg yolk
1/2 cup of stale breadcrumbs
2 tablespoons of sumac
1/2 bunch of mint
1 large loaf turkish bread
1 handful of mixed italian lettuce
2 tomatoes
5 small baby beetroots (roasted)
1/4 cup of lemon juice
drizzle of balsamic vinegar
pumpkin and cashew dip
salt and pepper
Combine the lamb, half the red onion, egg yolk, breadcrumbs, sumac, chopped mint and half the lemon juice in the bowl. Shape mixture into patties and then cook on a heated grill plate until cooked through.
Meanwhile, slice the bread and toast under a grill.
Once the meat has been removed from the grill plate and allowed to rest. Add the remaining red onions to the grill plate with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar.
Assemble your lettuce (dressed with salt and the remaining lemon juice), sliced tomato, sliced beets, pumpkin and cashew dip and any remaining mint.
Allow people to create their own combinations for their burger.
