Review: Me & Mrs Jones

July 27, 2014 by Shari

So it’s that time again when I hit up a cafe – in my efforts to get out of the house and make the most of my ‘freedom’ before baby number two arrives! The second cafe on my list was Me & Mrs Jones in Kingston. A hotspot on the weekend, a place where you will have to fight for a table…but at 11:30am on a Tuesday morning it was peaceful heaven!

That’s right – when I rocked up to the cafe, not only was I able to get a table and a coffee without any wait at all…but Mr Moo was sleeping and I was able to have my coffee whilst checking out some of my favourite peeps on Instagram.

When he did wake we were able to share in the delicious mixed juice which I had also ordered – of carrot, celery, apple and ginger. We are big fans of ginger during the winter to kill any of those niggling cold symptoms. And I am so happy that Mr Moo enjoys drinking it as a juice as much as we do.
It helped that I was able to get a table near the window so that Mr Moo could look out at the cars and trucks as they drove past in the rain. Something you need to think about when taking a toddler out to a cafe – what will they eat/drink and how will they be entertained whilst you eat (and are unable to sing 50 nursery rhymes whilst doing all of the actions).
We are pretty lucky that Mr Moo is normally more happy to eat whatever we are eating then any preprapared baby food – but I always have a few musli bars in my bag just incase he doesn’t enjoy what I am eating and wants to have something else. (Although ordering a side of bread is normally also a good option).

I ordered the special of blue eyed cod, with asparagus, chorizo and lemon, chili and caper salsa. At $34 it was much pricer then Autolyse last week – and it probably wouldn’t be something that I would do every week… but hey, I doubt I’ll be eating out at all in the first few weeks once the baby arrives, so it was my special treat!

AND BOY WAS IT SPECIAL!

It was delicious and the skin was so crispy and salty that you just couldn’t stop eating it. It was the prefect portion size (and that’s saying something as I shared a 1/3 of the fish with Mr Moo). It was light and refreshing – yet warming and really hit the spot on that super cold and wet Canberra day that we hit up the cafe.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this cafe as a ‘mummy friendly option’. I also think that this would be a great place to meet up with some mummy friends as they have more room then most cafes and you can sit around a ‘kitchen style’ table with a few prams and a few friends for a coffee.

GoodFoodWeek started in 2008 as a way of sharing recipes with uni friends and family who were spread near and far. It has evolved over the years to contain my ramblings as I’ve searched for a house, planned the perfect veggie patch, stumbled through farmer’s markets with my eye half open (because you need to be there at 6am to get the fresh eggs), had babies, gathered family and friends around a shared table, laughed out loud and enjoyed life to the fullest!
