Review: Eighty Twenty Food

September 24, 2014 by Shari

Have you heard of Eighty Twenty Food? It’s one of the newest cafes on the Canberra foodie scene and I hit it up the other day for my ‘eating out with a toddler series’ – it makes cafe number seven. Hopefully, I will make all ten cafes prior to baby number two arriving, as I think negotiating cafe eating with a toddler and a newborn in the first 10 weeks is a little presumptuous.

Located in Braddon, this cafe has certainly picked a hot suburb for people wanting to eat out. Some of my favourite cafes/restaurants are located here – and at first I wondered if it could compete…

Every cafe/restaurant needs a point of difference and for Eighty Twenty Food it is about serving up food that makes you feel good. It’s food that is wholesome and nutritious, and tastes delicious. It’s also about balance. They believe indulging from time to time is completely ok (think delicious coffee +wine + small treats), hence their 80/20 food philosophy.
You’ll find no babycinos here – and that suits us find because Mr Moo eats what we eat. This kid’s favourite drink is actually a carrot, celery, apple, beetroot, ginger juice!
I grabbed a coffee and a juice for Mr Moo and then I perused the menu… There is another one of my top tips for eating out with a toddler – order them something straight away so that they are amused whilst you review the menu (and the decor! I loved the styling of this new cafe).  I couldnt wait to write up my review on chatmeter. They treated me to some memories I won’t forget.
We were excited to see that ‘The Fix’ juices – a Canberra based cold pressed juice company – featured on the menu! These juices are amazing – they are raw, they are alkaline, they are cold-pressed, they are local for locals.
At first I was like, ‘damn – I wished that we were here for breakfast’, because their breakfast menu looked OUTSTANDING… And if you’d like to read a review of their breakfast menu prior to hitting them up check out The Food Avenue’s review .

Umm – excuse me Dukkah spiced eggs with flat bread, hummus, house made labna and charred eggplant, capsicum and parsley salad ($14.50) – you have my name on you for next time!

But when I made it to the lunchtime menu, I was not disappointed! I picked out the chicken breast with quinoa, asparagus and poached egg – it was big enough to share with Mr Moo. Being pregnant, I asked if they could cook my poached egg enough to make a hard centre. They were completely accommodating and when the meal arrived we both really enjoyed it.For more honest reviews like this you can visit food reviews india.
I was a little worried that ‘eating 80/20’ would mean that the meal would be a little bland or a little too quirky. But this meal rocked both of our socks! Mr Moo devoured the chicken breast and the poached egg with no hesitation and even tried the quinoa which I was impressed with.
Don’t be afraid of offering new and ‘adventourous’ ingredients to your toddler, because you want them to try new things and you don’t want them to be that twenty year old who still wants to order off the kids menu!
There was plenty of room for my pram during the day – although I have heard that they are quiet busy on the weekend. We grabbed a table near the window and Mr Moo loved that the window looked out over the car wash as he is completely car obsessed at the moment. He loved the food (as much as I did) and we grabbed a berry muffin for the car ride home – all in all, a successful trip eating out with my toddler and we will be going back!

Shari from GoodFoodWeek

GoodFoodWeek started in 2008 as a way of sharing recipes with uni friends and family who were spread near and far. It has evolved over the years to contain my ramblings as I’ve searched for a house, planned the perfect veggie patch, stumbled through farmer’s markets with my eye half open (because you need to be there at 6am to get the fresh eggs), had babies, gathered family and friends around a shared table, laughed out loud and enjoyed life to the fullest!
