Life: what’s in my kitchen this month

May 1, 2015 by Shari Leave a Comment

I felt a little overwhelmed during the month of April; it was jammed pack with events and I felt like criticisms were coming hard and fast. So as we start this new month, I want to start with a little more kindness and love. Everyone is just trying to do the best that they can.

As you know, I’m joining link ups this year and this link up is hosted by Celia’s from Fig Jam and Lime Cordial.

So in my May kitchen…

I am upping the LOVE factor – first and foremost! On a ‘good day’ I was doing ‘happy hour’ in our kitchen which involved me popping on some music and dancing around with the boys to keep them entertained whilst I prepared dinner. Snacks may also have been given if dinner was running a little behind schedule.

I am now making ever effort to bring ‘happy hour’ into our kitchen every day during April – because dancing makes me happy {and hopefully a better Mummy}.

I’ve got a lot of fennel {and green apples}. I really love this flavour combination with pork – you can find some of my favourite {Autumn} seasonal sides to go with pork here. Mr Moo is also really enjoying thinly sliced green apple or pear as his afternoon snack.

I’m finding that some afternoons we are getting a nap in with Mr Moo {2 years}, and some afternoons we are struggling to get him down and we hit melt down at 5pm. Do you have any tips for making afternoon naps easier or do you think I should work on dropping his afternoon nap?

We have a few stray bunnies – so I’ll be melted them down, mixing them with a little almond milk and making the best hot chocolate EVER for these cold Autumn nights.

In my May kitchen…

You can smell mushrooms for breakfast, lunch and dinner! I have whipped up a few one-pot-wonders in this cooler weather and I am sure that there will be many more to come. Mushrooms are in season and they make a great addition to you stews or I’m really enjoying them grilled {with lots of lurpak butter and fresh herbs} with some scrambled eggs for breakfast.

I know that mushrooms can divide the room… So are you a mushroom lover or a mushroom hater?

There is a few of these sweet mini savoy cabbages. The savoy cabbage is a dark-green winter cabbage with attractive, crinkled and blistered leaves and a robust flavour and texture. It is exceptionally good for use in cooked dishes. I thought that I would pick up a few and make some colcannon after I saw it on MKR. I make a similar potato dish with spinach – it’s Croatian and one of my husband’s favourites.

In my may kitchen…
I’m jazzing up my homemade sausage rolls with this awesome tomato relish from Anathoth Farm. I just saw that Anathoth Farm Sweet Chilli Relish won the Relish Category at the 2015 Australian Product of the Year Awards! Made with New Zealand tomatoes, apples, capsicums and garlic, it looks like something I should pick up next time I am at the supermarket { read more about it}.

What have you picked up lately? Do you think that the world in general needs more love at the moment? Can you taste the love in your cooking?

Get in my belly… I’ve been reading a lot abou Get in my belly…

I’ve been reading a lot about self love of late. I feel like there is so much self sacrifice when you’re a mother, and yet I am starting to realise that I need to love myself first to be a better mum and partner.

So here is to starting with something small for me. These @byronbaycookies are the business!!
Self love sometimes looks like just surging up lef Self love sometimes looks like just surging up leftovers and taking yourself to bed with a good book.

However, I still seem to feel that mum guilt. I mean, I think I need to do a little more than just follow @drsophiebrock (@smallbusinessgrowthclub has so many good things to say about Sophie)… am I doing enough? Are they happy? Am I creating good memories for them? Am I giving them good life skills and coping tactics? Am I creating enough one on one time with each of them?

I know I’m a people pleaser, a perfectionist (and some … scrap that… most people I know say I am also an over achiever). How do I flip my thinking to focus more on the positive and not be so critical of myself? As I don’t want to pass on this trait to my kids.

Boil the rice. Stir fry the beef. Toss some gem lettuce with black sesame seeds and sushi seasoning. Top it all off with kimchi.

Mine was store bought. @staceyclare_healthcoach have you ever made your own kimchi? Have you got a good recipe?

Shari from GoodFoodWeek

GoodFoodWeek started in 2008 as a way of sharing recipes with uni friends and family who were spread near and far. It has evolved over the years to contain my ramblings as I’ve searched for a house, planned the perfect veggie patch, stumbled through farmer’s markets with my eye half open (because you need to be there at 6am to get the fresh eggs), had babies, gathered family and friends around a shared table, laughed out loud and enjoyed life to the fullest!
