Motherhood: A Canberra Mummies Series

June 7, 2015 by Shari

The other week I felt a little overwhelmed by motherhood. I had a toddler who had moved into the ‘terrible two’s’ {who would cry if anyone except Mummy or Daddy spoke to him} and I had a baby that didn’t want to sleep {just feed all night long – and at this stage we were at the end of almost two weeks of this}.

I didn’t know where my happy and ever-content children had gone. I was having a bad fortnight, I was in a funk and I didn’t know how to get out of it. My best Mummy friend lives interstate – and with both of us having two little ones, it makes for a very strained phone conversation.
And then a friend {a fellow Mama} called up and asked if she could pop around and bring me a takeaway coffee. It was one of the best coffees that I have ever had!
It got me thinking; motherhood can be such a lonely journey. But the fact of the matter is that there are so many Mamas out there battling teething, colds, the terrible twos, homework, teenage defiance, lack of sleep {gosh, the list is endless} and most would love a hot cuppa and a quick chat!
Whilst I can’t help out with the hot coffee {unless you live in Canberra and leave your address in the comments}, I thought that I would do what I think is second best and provide a quick chat with some fellow Canberra Mamas.

This series will run each Sunday – so I hope you’ll be back to see whom I feature next. I thought that I would answer my 10 quick questions first – so here they are:

QUESTIONS FOR CANBERRA MOTHERS

1.     What’s my favourite café to go to with children?

I love Ricardo’s in Jamison for the park being right next door. I also like Cafe Enjoy at Gold Creek – they have a little play centre surrounded by a great fence which means that your little ones can play, whilst you have a coffee, and you don’t need to worry about being close to the car park. I’ve also noticed that Adore Tea have set up a little play centre of the little ones inside {which is awesome in this crappy Canberra weather}.

2.      Where do I go in Canberra to have a little ‘ME TIME’?
Every Monday night, I escape for 1 hour and play Netball. This is my favourite part of the week, as I can drive with the music up, I get a rush from the endorphins that come with a good workout and I get to enjoy adult company {including women who don’t have children and have extremely interesting topics of conversation}.

3.     What is my child/rens favourite meal?
Grilled fish and chips. Well it is actually Mr Moo’s favourite meal as we are really struggling to introduce solids to the Little Dude. I love to make my own grilled fish and oven baked ‘chips’, but we also really love a $25 Friday Fish Night special down at the Croatian Club in O’Connor {how can you beat a whole snapper and sides of chips, salad and blitfa for $25? Oh and Mummy didn’t have to cook it}.

4.     What is my ‘go-to’ recipe when there is pandemonium in my house?
Spaghetti Bolognese. Bolognese sauce, known in Italian as ragù alla bolognese, is a meat-based sauce originating from Bologna, Italy. In Italian cuisine, it is customarily used to dress “tagliatelle al ragù” and to prepare “lasagne alla bolognese”. {Thanks Wikipedia} I actually think Spaghetti Bolognese is Italian for quiet and content children/ instant crowd pleaser for dinner!

5.     When my can’t get dinner on the table, where do we order takeaway from?
At the moment, we are loving Thai Herb in Harrison. They have an awesome online ordering system which means that I can jump online and order our dinner for a time when my husband is able to pick it up after work. The spring rolls and coconut rice always goes down well with Mr Moo and my husband has a special spot for Pad Ko Pao. I’ll just about eat anything that I don’t have to cook myself when the house is in pandemonium.

6.     What is my day-to-day beauty routine? I’m not a morning person, so in the morning I brush my teeth, wash my face and then apply a BTX serum followed by a lightening cream by Clear Skincare and then mineral makeup by . I shower at night where I wash my face with the same gel cleanser from Clear Skincare then apply a Hydrapeel serum, followed by 2% cream, as I am trying to help reduce the redness in my acne scaring so I don’t feel the need to wear makeup everyday.

7.     Where do I get my eyebrows waxed?
Le Beauty Lounge in Bruce. The wonderful Caddie has waxed my eyebrows {and the monobrow of my husband’s} for almost 10 years now! In fact, all of my friends {including a few other males} have their eyebrows waxed there.

8.     Where do I take my child/ren that’s not too expensive {as in an outing/ it could be FREE}?
We love Paint and Play in Ainslie {think behind the Ainslie Shops in the Wakefield Gardens}. It’s FREE {with the option of a gold coin donation}, and they provide awesome activities for my little ones like; painting, playdoh, jigsaw puzzle, bubbles, stories, and free-play. It’s also a great place to gain some adult conversation if you’re a stay-at-home-mum {or dad or grandparent or carer for that matter}. Last week, I invited another mother up to Edgar’s Inn for a coffee and a babycino and it really helped me get out of my mummyfunk.

9.     Where do I take my child/ren when it is cold and wet outside? I used to love the Mums and Bubs session at the Palace Electric Cinemas when Mr Moo was little. I would feed him and drive to the movies {where he would fall asleep on the car ride over and proceed to sleep for the entire movie}. There is no way my two little ones would last through the movie these days, so when it is raining and cold we head to the library to read some new stories, or to the mall for a Boost Juice or to the Dinosaur Museum at Gold Creek {it’s free for kids under the age of 4 and $15 for an adult}.

10.  What do I love most about raising a family in Canberra? I miss my family and their support a lot living in Canberra {as they live in Sydney}. But I do love the ease of living in Canberra – everything is so close and you’re never in the car for very long {which is awesome as my youngest hates the car}. I also think that Canberra has a lot going on – even though all my Sydney friends think that it’s a boring, small country town – and it’s a great place to raise a young family!

So happy to be out in the sun, on his swing set that he got for his second birthday. It’s moments like these that just make your heart melt as a Mummy.

Shari from GoodFoodWeek

GoodFoodWeek started in 2008 as a way of sharing recipes with uni friends and family who were spread near and far. It has evolved over the years to contain my ramblings as I’ve searched for a house, planned the perfect veggie patch, stumbled through farmer’s markets with my eye half open (because you need to be there at 6am to get the fresh eggs), had babies, gathered family and friends around a shared table, laughed out loud and enjoyed life to the fullest!
