Life: Love Local – A. Baker

November 29, 2015 by Shari

I’d been to A.Baker on multiple occasions before they well and truly blew me away with their superb dining experience at Eat.Drink.Blog. A.Baker is a local produce restaurant and the producer of amazing artisan sourdough. We normally hit up A.Baker for breakfast – taking interstate guests and even choosing it as the destination to take the Little Dude’s Godparents when we asked if they would be his Godparents. I enjoy A.Baker for all it stands for and for the outstanding produce that they put on the plate. If you are a foodie and you haven’t hit up A.Baker I highly recommend it. Today, I have the pleasure of sharing the Director of A.Baker, Jarrod Deaton’s answers to my ‘love local’ questions.

What is your food story?

The word ‘local’ isn’t just a generic tagline that we splash on our menu nor is it the latest buzz word around A. BAKER we genuinely live it! Each of us are passionate food foragers and growers who love our connection to the farms who supply us. It’s these relationships that begin to differentiate us.

Our seasonal menus that showcase the best that Canberra has to offer are modified weekly depending on availability. Our wine list is completely local and our bar boast one of the largest selections of Australian spirits and craft beers.

Why are you passionate about Canberra’s local produce?

We’re lucky to live in this wonderful city with its incredible growing (and producing) community. There aren’t many cities that allow you to source core produce from such close proximity to the restaurant. One of the nicest things about receiving local produce is that we often swap our artisan breads for small orders of local fruit and vegetables.

Why is it important that we understand where our food comes from?

The journey a product takes and the story it creates as it moves through each generative process is incredibly unique. One worth exploring! Being conscious of your food origins not only ensures you’re buying fresh, ripe, seasonal produce but you’re also choosing to live more sustainably which is essential in this day and age.

What differentiates your restaurant from others?

Our connection to our suppliers is at the core of what makes us unique but what’s often missed during a visit to our restaurant is our artisan sourdough bakery in the basement. Our bakers use house-milled flour to bake hand-formed, long ferment sourdough breads and pastries every day which are used throughout the menu and stocked on our retail shelves.

What does local produce mean to you?

Local produce is more than a commitment, it’s a way of life and should be explored across every facet and not limited to food.

Why is supporting local important to you?

Aside from buying sustainably, it’s important that our money stays in the community to facilitate growth and support local enterprise.

Have you tried A.Baker for breakfast, lunch or dinner? Have you walked by their amazing garden in the New Acton prescient? Do you believe that eating local is important? Is there a local Canberra food story that you would like me to cover? If you would like to share your local food story I would love for you to get in contact with me!

Shari from GoodFoodWeek

GoodFoodWeek started in 2008 as a way of sharing recipes with uni friends and family who were spread near and far. It has evolved over the years to contain my ramblings as I’ve searched for a house, planned the perfect veggie patch, stumbled through farmer’s markets with my eye half open (because you need to be there at 6am to get the fresh eggs), had babies, gathered family and friends around a shared table, laughed out loud and enjoyed life to the fullest!
