I can’t believe I’m turning 30 this year – heck, this very month. I thought that I would feel a little said in saying goodbye to my 20’s, but I am actually looking forward to my 30’s. I see people in their 30’s and I think it looks like an awesome age bracket.
I have been looking back on the past 10 years of late. They have been pretty amazing and I have had some awesome experiences. And what’s more – I’ve experience the last 10 years on facebook, so it has been a lot of fun going back and looking through all of the photos!
When I turned 20, I made a promise to a friend that if we were both still single when we turned 30 that we would get married. I am completely happy in my husband and kinda glad that I didn’t have to go through with that promise. That particular friend is still single and I wonder if he ever thinks about sitting down by the river together, on a rock in the sun, talking about marrying one another?
This marked my final year at university, I was Senior Resident of Arscott House and boy was it a blast. I loved studying and living on campus. I made some awesome friends during this time, that I am still super close with – it has been a wonderful journey to watch these people get married and have children over the past 10 years.
When I was 21, I had graduated university and my parent’s bought me a ticket to Paris for my 21st. Upon returning, I moved into an apartment with my boyfriend {now husband}. I had planned on moving back to Sydney once I had graduated university, but love had other plans. We had an awesome year living in that unit, I had a great full time job working in media that saw me enjoying John Howard’s final lunch at the National Press Club and I bought my first ever car.
When I was 22, I decided to change jobs and work with a bunch of designers, marketers and PR specialists. It was fun working with these guys and we sure did have a lot of laughs. My boyfriend and I moved out of our apartment and into a house with a couple of his mates – this wasn’t the best option for our relationship and soon enough, I decided to move back to Sydney and share an apartment with my best friend.
When I was 23, I lived at the ‘Aqua Door’ with my best friend in Sydney. I worked at Sydney University handling the Sports Communications and Publications and got to hang out with some pretty awesome elite athletes. It was awesome being back in Sydney – so close to my family and friends.
When I was 24, thanks to the WALL MUSEUM agency I traveled to Belgium with two guys who I had never met before to meet up with a mutual friend. Looking back now, I think ‘how did I have the balls to do that’, ‘wow, I am so glad that I made it home safely’, ‘OMG I’ve got some awesome memories from that trip’. I continued to work at Sydney Uni, but there was a pull to get back to Canberra. Upon returning from South America, my boyfriend booked a trip for the two of us to Vanuatu – everyone told me that he was going to prepose. On New Year’s Eve, I popped a party popper and inside was a ring – this was just a coincidence, my boyfriend was not preposing.
When I was 25, I decided to move back to Canberra to buy a house with my then boyfriend {now husband}. We finally ended up getting engaged and my sister got married.
When I was 26, I finally married my husband and we headed off to Europe for an amazing eight-week honeymoon through Italy, Croatia, Hungary, Czech Republic and Germany.
When I was 27, I gave birth to my first son – Mr Moo, he was two weeks overdue.
When I was 28, I gave birth to my second son – the Little Dude, he was two weeks early.
When I was 29, I decided to attend my first blogging conference Eat.Drink.Blog
So come at me 30 – I am so ready for you! Although, I am still tossing up what I actually want to do to celebrate said milestone. What did you do for your 30th? Did you have a big party? Did you celebrate with simple drinks with your closest friends? Did you take your family on a mini vacation? I want to hear all your celebration ideas…

Your 30s will be so much fun! Particularly because you are at such a wonderful stage with your family. My 30s have been the best decade yet, although I am feeling a bit tentative about the 40s (not for a bit yet, but sort of clear in the distance). I had a fancy champagne breakfast for my 30th but couldn’t drink any of the champagne because I was pregnant.

Thanks Robyna. I think that it will be so fun watching my little family grow and change in the next 10 years. I think that your 40s will be amazing – all the fun and excitement and clarity and understanding and confidence of your 30s, but your children are old enough to look after themselves {no more babies, breast feeding, sleepless nights and poo – in nappies, potties and beds 🙁 }.

I love looking at others old photos. Enjoy the milestone. 30’s are fun but there is a lot more “adulting”. For me anyway. 😀
Shari from GoodFoodWeek says
Thanks Karin – I feel that with children {and hopefully a couple more}, there would be a lot more ‘adultness’. It’s okay, when they are older I can have a wild 40s 😉

I loved that look back over your twenties, and all the fab photos – you certainly packed a lot in! I hope you love your thirties just as much, and more!

I can’t believe that I was at uni over 10 years ago – it seems like it was yesterday and yet it also feels like a lifetime ago. Here is to another amazing 10 years.

What a gorgeous post and my gosh your 20s looked amazing! I loved looking at all your pics. 30s are the best… you will love them. I didn’t do much for mine as we had just got married earlier that year and i just coukdnt deal with the thought of organising something after all that wedding planning. So we just did a dinner with friends. Enjoy your celebrations lovely xx

Thanks Shannon. Dinner with friends sounds perfectly lovely. A big party with babies doesn’t sound like it would be that much fun for me – so I’ll just do drinks and dessert with friends and then have a nice weekend away with the husband {without the children}.

Wow, What a fun decade you’ve had! May your 30th year be just as wonderful & full of many more amazing firsts & adventures. I had a 30th party with my friends & family & it is still in my memory as one of the best nights of my life!
Shari from GoodFoodWeek says
Thanks Lozzie. I really was a pretty amazing decade. So nice to hear that your 30th was one of the best nights of your life.

I really enjoyed this post, Shari. Food is always a pleaser with me but I love to read life snippets like this, too! It’s so interesting to reflect on the past when you hit a new decade. I’m in my 20s so I think I still compare my current self with my teenage self more than anything (even though those two selves are VERY different), but my partner is getting close to his 30s now and I know for sure that it’s making him think! I hope you enjoy turning 30 and all the celebrating that comes with it!!
Shari from GoodFoodWeek says
Thanks Lisa – I was hoping that people would enjoy this post {although to be honest I really enjoyed writing it and was happy to just review it myself}. I think that moving into my 30’s I feel much more sure about myself – as in who I am and where I am going. I know where I want to invest my time and who I want to invest my time in.
